What is psychotherapy – and when does it help?

Psychotherapy Mental Health CBT

Many people who consider psychotherapy ask themselves: Is my problem actually serious enough? I hear this question often – and my answer is usually: if you’re asking it, you already deserve support.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a scientifically grounded treatment for psychological distress and mental health conditions. It takes place in conversation – between you and a licensed therapist – and aims to help you understand and change thought patterns, behaviours, and emotional reactions.

In Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is my specialism, we explore together: which thoughts, beliefs, or behaviours are maintaining your difficulty? And what might help you feel genuinely better in the long run?

When is psychotherapy helpful?

Psychotherapy is not only for people with severe mental illness. It can be valuable in many situations:

  • Persistent low mood or loss of joy that has lasted more than a few weeks
  • Anxiety that limits daily life or leads to avoidance
  • Chronic stress or signs of burnout
  • Sleep problems, rumination, or inner restlessness
  • Difficulties in relationships or recurring conflicts
  • Major life events such as grief, separation, job loss, or illness
  • Feeling stuck and not knowing how to move forward

Is online psychotherapy as effective?

Yes. Numerous studies show that video-based psychotherapy is as effective as in-person therapy. The advantage: you can participate from a place where you feel safe and comfortable – no commute, no waiting room.

What next?

If you’re unsure whether psychotherapy is right for you, I warmly invite you to an initial conversation. In a no-obligation first session we explore together what’s on your mind and whether working together makes sense.
